1. Students want to speak for the majority of their lesson, not listen to a teacher monologue
I am sure that this comes as no surprise. Students have paid to speak during their lessons not to spend it listening to someone else.
Here are a few tips to reduce teacher talking time and increase student talking time:
Avoid lengthy grammar or vocabulary explanations – give a brief description and move on to CCQs (Concept Checking Questions) and get the student involved. You will not only make the student speak more but ensure they understand the concept very well.
Use elicitation rather than explanation – your students usually know more than it seems! Your role should be to help them produce the language they already know passively.
Give short answers whenever students ask you conversation questions – this will force them to ask you more questions and as a result speak more!
Answer your student’s conversation questions with a very short answer and a question! – this will always put the student in the centre of attention.
Include pauses when you speak (e.g. during discussions) – this will make it easier for the student to interrupt you before they forget what they wanted to say!
Provide your students with pre-session tasks to do – if the lesson is supposed to be focused on grammar, give your students some information, sample sentences, online exercises so that the lesson can be more about clarifying your student’s doubts and practising the target structure rather than you teaching the concept from scratch.
Ask for feedback – at the end of the lesson ask your students to sum up the main points covered during the session. Instead of you giving a 5-minute summary to your student, he or she could go through the chat, read out the new words and comment on them. Student satisfaction guaranteed!
2. Students want teachers who structure their lessons
Very few students just want to chat. Instead they want you to provide them with a learning plan to help them reach their language-learning goals. Each time a student completes a session with you, discuss what you’re going to do next. This could be suggested by the student, or better, recommended by you as part of the learning pathway you’re providing them.
In addition, don’t forget to provide homework activities that the student can do between lessons.
These activities include listening to podcasts, reading English newspapers or grammar review exercises.
If a student has plenty of homework, see improvements faster and be more motivated to stay the course with you.
Don’t forget to recommend how many sessions they should do with you (we recommend two or three sessions a week).
3. Students want teachers who personalise their learning plan
One of the reasons many people come to Fluentify is because they’ve tried the standard English courses and they still don’t feel satisfied with their English level.
That’s why the personal student plan is great because it’s designed specifically for their needs and interests. Students that need to improve their ability to give presentations shouldn’t have to spend time memorising the names of farm animals. When choosing activities to include in the plan, it’s important to keep the student’s goals AND level in mind to make sure that the activities are interesting, relevant, and appropriate with increasing difficulty as the month progresses.
To provide students with tailor-made lessons you need to find out:
- Why your student is taking classes
- How they plan to use English in the future
- What your student is interested in or passionate about
- Their strengths and weaknesses with the language
And that’s it. Follow these suggestions and you’ll build a loyal following of students who’ll keep booking classes with you, their favourite teacher.
